Each state feels like a completely new story with new people and new atmosphere. This makes reading exhausting.

Now I am eager to get to the end of the book. Can’t say that I am not curious.

I don’t get it, so much history textbook about North Carolina and nothing about Tennessee? Maybe, I am missing part of what the book wants to tell me.

Such a pain reading this book. Guess, that is part of the story telling. But too lengthy, too repetitive, too much cruelties.

Exhausting read. Everything is hopeless and brutal.

Finally there is some movement in the story. I like the learning aspect. But storytelling is complicated. And the depiction of brutality as ordinary is really hard to bear. I lack a central figure to sympathize with.

Tough start.
