What stood out to me is that Jeffers isn’t just revisiting Phillis Wheatley’s marriage. She’s exposing how Black history gets distorted when racist assumptions become official narrative. The writing felt like an act of protection, recovery, & tenderness & especially in the way it allows Wheatley the possibility of love, complexity, & a fulfilling life
