This was the last in a collection of 50 short stories and I loved it. More novella than short it's unfussy of style and unflinching in topic, and with casual ease does Somerset Maugham bring to life 1920s colonialism in the Pacific; thus against the backdrop of an oppressive wet season he explores the potentially unforgiving dogma of the religiously devout.
