I feel like a Lonely Planet guide to Georgia has more history, heart, emotion and culture than this book. The Wikipedia entry for 'chocolate' makes me crave a hot chocolate more than this book's descriptions of its addictive, best-in-the-world recipe. I care more about and know more about the people who have written blurbs on the cover than the characters within its pages, who I have spent 200 gruelling pages with.

This is one of the most egregious examples of 'telling not showing' I've ever read. I have spent 140 pages with Stasia in particular and could tell you next to nothing about her or her relationships with her lover or her family, in this so-called romantic and family epic. 20 hours of reading left to improve?
