INCITING INCIDENT: Melody has never been able to talk in her entire life, but her mom buys a machine that would help her talk to people for the first time. " Welcome to Medi-Talker to Trish's voice saying, Hi! I'm Melody. Talk to me! I can't wait to take it to school and introduce my new computer to everybody there." (p. 137). Melody now has the ability to talk and has reached an important chapter in her life.

OVERCOMING THE MONSTER: Melody has a disability and is trying her best to overcome her disadvantage of not being able to communicate with classmates. "I have learned to be patient with people. Once again I point to Rose's computer and then to the words me too. I search all over my communication board , and the words better, nicer, and cooler just aren't there (p.124). Melody points to her board, so it's hard to talk.
