AAAGH!

I can't recall ever being freaked out by a book like I was by this one. Up until now it's been a nice kid-friendly adventure, I'm reading it in the dark at night, what could go wrong, then bam! Right in the face with this!
Great use of the artistic medium, too.
The book's going to really have to drop the ball to get less than four stars at this point.

I thought it'd be safe to start with this book even though it was the fourth in the setting, since it was a stand-alone. I begin to regret that decision: there are a lot of references to the earlier books that the translator needs to tell me about.
Still having a good time with it, though. I'd like to visit this city myself.

So we're on a search for a new work, something revolutionary, in the place of the old works, the history and forgotten lore of the world? You can't get much more polar opposites than that. I wonder how the story ties them together.

I can't remember the last time the start of a story got me this hyped. We've got an introduction outright warning against reading further lest we're drawn into the same terrible peril of the main character, then a classic call for great adventure (wish I'd gotten to read the super-special manuscript myself, but I see why it couldn't be allowed), capped with a whole city's worth of books!
May it not disappoint!
