Then she goes into McTeauges work and steals gold, while he is in distraught about Tina. She goes to Zerkow a greedy polish jew, who does anything to get gold. She lies to him about her past saying that she used to be rich and live with gold worth a million dollars.

Maria is the maid of the complex where McTeague works. Mac drops off Trina, who doesn’t want her teeth to be to damaged, comes back 3 times a week. McTeague falls in love with her; however while she’s asleep from anesthesia, he kisses her. When she awakes he asks her to marry him. She says no no, and throws up the chapter ends with her drinking an anti epilepsy mixture.

First chapter describes the city of San Francisco, introduces us to McTeague, and as well as Marcus. Trina, Marcus’s cousin, lost a tooth and is being sent to McTeague the next day. Both of the men are not very smart and Marcus tries to talk politics with McTeague.
