Tough there was a great distance to be traversed before the vitals of the empire could be reached, the command of the sea was in Persian hands & by means of his hoarded wealth the King could customarily corrupt his enemies by bribery. He was a weakling, his satraps unreliable, his native levies of low fighting value. These assets favored a bold & judicious enemy.
