I've read many devastating books in my life-time. Few of them are as devastating as The Jungle. Just a completely heart-breaking, harrowing descent into the hells of American capitalism, a broken system that kills and subjugates the very working-class to benefit the rich. It's not just a critique of the meatpacking industry or even a plea for empathy, but a demand for change. What a cathartic ending.
