So Pinch didn’t know why Jonas was fleeing Tigg, and when he knows he can keep it a secret if he murders Tigg (1181-2).

How and why did/would Nadgett orchestrate Tom Pinch’s help in apprehending Jonas Chuzzlewit? Did Martin want to educate Tom (1174)?

Tom is to work amongst books (1140).

In Chp. 38, Dickens shifts from Tom Pinch to Nadgett to Tigg Montague to Jonas Chuzzlewit, all while concealing the contents of Nadgett’s writing from us (111).

Nadgett prefers writing over spoken word: “We never know who’s listening” (1100). Apparently, listening is an action often mangled in the performance.
