Septology I was an absolutely gorgeous start to this novel. The writing style is maybe the most entrancing I’ve ever read, the stream of consciousness prose mirrors so many aspects of how I feel my brain works. I also already feel like this book is helping me heal and reconcile religious trauma, although I want to keep reflecting on why that is hitting for me so deeply. I’m already in so love with this book.

I’ve been reading Septology V while subbing, which has weirdly enough aligned really well with the frequent breaks to deal with students as things start to unravel a bit more. Really thought I’d understand the doppelgänger stuff more, but I do have theories on that, and ultimately I think it must just be some sort of reflection of the shimmering darkness. Still such an incredible book.

Septology IV is making me start to feel the cracks slipping into the repetition of Asle’s psyche, and I’m just very excited to see where that continues to go. You can feel his general distaste for making any new connections rubbing up against his spirituality in such a fascinating and depressing way.

Septology III was fascinating, maybe the most dream like so far as we see both the lines between the two Asles and present and past start to blur, this book almost magically shows how and why the things that have happened to us inform the lives we live, even down to the most specific and mundane details. I also love how it portrays the feeling of falling asleep, which is something I didn’t even know a book could do

Septology II felt like a really beautiful exploration of how mundanity and grief/trauma intersect. I found myself feeling more bored by this part than part I, but the last few pages were truly devestating and helped me understand the part as a whole. There’s such a deep mystery here about both Asles’ identities that the shimmering darkness of the intersecting painting represents so well. Absolutely loving this.
