The ending really stayed with me. All the secrets that held the characters together finally come out, causing everything to fall apart, especially the church community that once felt so important. It shows how Nadia and Aubrey grow up, even though it’s painful. I liked how the ending wasn’t perfectly happy, and not everything works out perfectly. It made me think about how secrets can shape people’s lives for years.

Aubrey goes to a doctor secretly and realizes Nadia is the girl from Luke’s past who had an abortion. Being overwhelmed, Aubrey has sex with Luke, which makes it even more complicated. Later, Luke does the same thing with Nadia and even suggests leaving Aubrey, but this makes her realize how wrong things have gotten. This part is really tense because it shows how secrets can push people into making hurtful decisions.

Nadia’s return to a relationship with Luke shows how difficult it is to leave the past behind, she ends up repeating old patterns instead of moving forward, even in a new place. At the same time, Aubrey’s experience feels more painful. Her visit to Mrs. Sheppard and the realization that her marriage lacks emotional closeness made me feel a lot of sympathy for her. It also shows how lonely she feels in her situation.

Secrets begin to show up when Luke’s parents learn about and pay for Nadia’s abortion, which increases tension between Nadia and Luke. This moment feels especially uncomfortable because something so personal is no longer private, and Nadia has little control over how it is handled. On the other hand, Luke's lack of honesty creates more distance between them, making their relationship even worse.

Just before Aubrey's wedding, Nadia returns home to find her father has removed all pictures of her deceased mother. The empty walls force her to resist her grief. After this, she calls her boyfriend, Shadi, to share the pain of losing Elise. This moment reveals the separation of her mourning and the tension between remembering and moving on, highlighting the lasting impact of her mother’s absence on Nadia’s life.

Nadia leaves for college to escape her past, and Luke’s life unravels further after a violent attack ends his football dreams. During this time, Aubrey begins visiting him, and their connection deepens. The chapter’s turning point comes when they exchange secrets. This moment underscores how guilt and fear shape honesty, showing that even best friends have limits, and that truths can both connect and divide us.

Now that Nadia works for the pastor’s wife, it brings her even closer to the church community, making the sense of judgment feel certain. At the same time, her friendship with Aubrey is also genuine but fragile. This creates a lot of tension, since it ties her more deeply to something she’s trying to escape. It makes me think about how being forced into certain spaces can make it harder to get away from your past.

I really like how the story follows Nadia as she deals with grief, complicated relationships, and the expectations of a church community. You can already see how decisions carry weight, for example, Nadia choosing to start a secret relationship with Luke, and then deciding what to do about an unexpected pregnancy. The writing is calm but also tense. Like something important is always just beneath the surface.
