Don’t let your ego takeover your humbleness. Be confident in who you are, you don’t need to show it. Never let ego turn into greed or thinking that you can leverage others going down to go or stay higher up.

Only I know the race I’m running and ego is the driving force for attempting to be better than someone. I should be attempting to be the best version of myself. It convinces you to try and have it all when you should be enjoying what you have. Ego convinces you that you can have it all, but life has natural trade offs (trying to run Manhattan, bartend, real estate, etc.).

Create standards of performance and focus on that instead of success. Bill Walsh created Standards of Excellence and winning became inevitable. Focus less on the narrative (being a bartender, a comedian, a cook, etc.) and focus more on the craft. Prioritize little wins instead of earth shattering goals and initiatives.

Genghis Khan had created an empire from continual learning during his conquests. It’s important to continually push yourself to learn and educate new things. Otherwise you’re defaulting to an ego and thinking you know everything. Make it an effort to try and learn new things, put yourself in new environments, and understand how you learn.

I’ve been enjoying the ideas presented in this book so far. It reminds me to let go of things that aren’t important.
