guy who is definitely Not going through a major dissociative episode voice: "parents said hello to debbie and the tangible participant"

to me "i didn't know your son but i loved him anyway" is kind of key that unlocks this whole book. the thought that bret cares more than he lets on, that this is causes deep psychological damage for him. i feel like in reviews people find bret pretty annoying and unbearable but i cant help but feel deep sympathy for him as someone who is experiencing a full mental break completely alone...

world most fascinating unreliable narrator and i'm serious. beckoning the reader in by telling them he's taking them into his deeply intimate confidence while at the same time maintaining the distance of "i remember i remember". also literally "...what they saw as my tendency to embellish.... the additional details id lace a story with as well as what i concealed." SO WINKING
