I believe most (if not all) of what’s happening is happening inside the narrator’s dreams. He said that he suffers from headaches and insomnia (which he attributes to her “deserting” him for another man) and the drugs prescribed to him give him these horrible dreams, in which she is the recurring star. And he said that the dreams are not confined to sleep, and he came to enjoy them.

I want to know more about the “emergencies” though and what is going on in the world in general. But so far, I’m loving this book! It’s so surrealistic.
