“We were two brides filled with sorrow, unable to change our fates. I loved her. I would always love her. That was far more important than the men we were to marry. Somehow we would need to find a way to stay connected.”

“Another set of men living on the other side of the world had also divided our country…We thought we were free, but so far the only difference in our lives here on Jeju was that the Japanese flag was lowered, and the American flag was raised. One colonizer had been replaced by another.”

“Sang-mun regarded Mi-ja out of the corner of his eye. She was frozen in place. She was, o realized, afraid of him.”

Young-sook fantasizing about marriage is so interesting, and it’s fun that it’s girlish and childish for someone who had to grow up so quickly. She seems to dismiss the Japanese occupation and his involvement in it, which is funny to see given how fiercely Hado resisted Japanese influence.

“Joy is a delicious luxury that we experience most cautiously, for tragedy conceals itself around every corner. How different it is with friendship. No one picks a friend for us; we come together by choice. We are not tied together through ceremony or the responsibility to create a son; we tie ourselves together through moments. The spark when we first meet. Laughter and tears shared.”
