Beautiful and interesting complexity, similar to that of the descriptions I've heard of Mitlan in the series Diablero.

It seems pretty neat to be able to name the stars. I was only ever able to identify the big dipper, and the little dipper, searching for the north star, but I can't even remember those now. That one little mention in this novel makes me want to go look up all of the constellations especially Cassiopeia.

It's best not to know certain things? Only someone with something to hide says something like that.

Mamlab, I imagine, must be the Mayan equivalent of Tlaloc. Moody weather gods remind me of the scene from the episode of Genie Make a Wish, in the old city of Dubai, where Iblis and the good psychopath get rained on while seated at their table in the middle of the veranda, and it's only raining on their table.

This priest obviously neglected to mention a few things, which explains why many religious institutions forbid people to read the sacred texts, especially in the original languages.

"...sent the old owners fleeing abroad, though it didn't improve the workers' conditions."
Oh. I had imagined that things got at least a little bit better after the Revolution, for the poorest people. Stupid me. And now I see why everybody keeps calling me naive and utopian.

Sorry, Mérida (where I lived for a few months some years ago...) and the Yucatan peninsula are not on the Pacific, and if it was meant as a Pacific Sea as in quiet and calm, the Atlantic is not that, either , so either this is a massive typo or the author was kind of embarrassingly non diligent in her research? Ah, ok, reading the paragraph again I see that I've misinterpreted: far away -the Pacific side is as far
