"Never before, one may assume, and a human being who was awake, sober, with an intellectual justification for what he believed, and responsible for the event, believed that he was literally witnessing the end of the world."

The book certainly deserves a solid 5 stars for this chapter about the Trinity test. Breathtakingly profound.

"And alongside a passage relating that Bohr had deliberately sidestepped the OSRD leadership to contact Roosevelt directly, Conant wrote XX and one word: mistake." Ahhh!

It takes some a serious examination to realize how intensive Prof. H's research on Conant himself and his role in major events of American nuclear project is.

Prof. Hershberg could get really pedantic sometimes in his book, and yes it is quite a dense book. But it's indeed a very appropriate assignment for a nuclear history course. Very informative book about the key figure behind the American nuclear project.

As a huge fan of his (yes, he is THE BEST history professor at GW and THE MAN for Global CW History. I don't usually argue with people but on this very statement challenge of any kind is not tolerated), I don't really find myself enjoying this one as much as the Marigold one.
