Hi, Marquise! Thanks for sharing your review because it helped me realize the “ick” I’ve been feeling reading it. Before I share more, I’d like to say that my native tongue is not English, so pardon me if I sound broken, grammar and all that.

Anyway, I just finished reading the book, and I’m now writing my own review. But thank the universe I’ve seen yours because it put my thinking much more in a perspective I’d also want to share. I indeed noticed the grapey vibe you mentioned and how the author [might have unintentionally] devalued women. Honestly, I picked this up because shamelessly I’m in a mood for an MLM, but as you’ve pointed out, their love story felt convoluted. Don’t get me wrong, I actually cried in the end, all the bargaining with Michael, it was emotional indeed. But at the same time, my cries carried a reservation with a question in mind, “Why would an archangel suddenly negotiates?” It didn’t feel consistent with Catholic theology (I’m familiar with it also as I’m a cradle Catholic; though not practicing anymore). I admit I found the soft magic system a kind of flair, but it didn’t wow me because it felt like the magic was there to serve as a plot device, instead of being its own.

However, in totality, I loved the themes on war, and what I gleaned out from it is that no one really actually wins from a war, that everybody loses. And yet, thanks to you, I realized how demonized the reasoning and logic was. Somehow it makes me thinking right now that nothing matters because all the characters were somehow possessed by Mars. 😅

It just didn’t feel epic anymore.
