I understand the need for footnotes in a science-heavy book like this, but each one is a speed bump, slowing down the flow of the book. Mary seems to try to compensate for that by making them funny, but it also makes them longer, and that often gets annoying. I wish she’d reel it in a bit.

This is an interesting science book but Mary’s witty footnotes get so tedious. I keep thinking, “You made me stop what I was reading—AGAIN—because you thought you were very funny.” It’s less irritating when she provides important context and makes a joke while doing so, but when she does it JUST to make a joke, or goes on much longer than necessary so that she can make a joke, it’s obnoxious.
