This is okay. There's a recurring motif I've noticed - American history being given little respect by Americans themselves, and the commercialization of everything. I hate to generalize, and of course it's Bryson's perception, but that's one of my key takeaways so far.

(Also, the copy I have doesn't sync with the page no. here, hence why I haven't shifted it. Also, recurring themes still present - broken down village towns, well maintained major cities, and a sense of tackiness pervading everything with some standout moments (e.g. the Grand Canyon).
