"She will not go anyolace where they don't have trees for her to climb." The book so far sets up Joan for what she will soon become. She is somebody, and forgive me for the phrase, not like other girls. In this instance, I welcome it. Jeanne's a strong, quick, energetic, and conscientious child; she spends her days in Domrémy working and helping villagers. We've also seen how she has first dealt with death, how sad.

The prose of this book could only hold my attention long enough for me to find another book of the same story. I might pick this back up again someday, we shall see. For what it is worth, I think Chen creates the world of France and its people with craft, careful not to undersell what France really needed--a strong figure. I think secularism for Jeanne was a choice, a bold choice. Maybe too bold.
