On the hero's journey, the young hero is separated from his/her/their parents/guardians in order to learn new lessons, reflect upon the wisdom imparted before being driven apart, and gain experience within the storyworld. In Greenmantle, Frankie and Ali are also separated from police and law-enforcement that ordinarily they might rely upon when confronted with criminals.
