Very interesting and evocative introduction. The idea of life as a function, or series of functions —the distillation of what it actually is is still to be developed in further chapters— is something I've already heard and read in other parts, as in the introduction of Negarestani's "Intelligence and Spirit". The style seems a bit unique, blending history with anecdotes (Blaise is an agent in this history, anyways).
