My penguin edition starts out with tips on reading this book and begging me to keep reading even though it is very boring, it was even boring for her contemporaries who never had anything better to do! It even tells me to get an audiobook. That's new :)

“The folly of not allowing people to be comfortable at home—and the folly of people’s not staying comfortably at home when they can! …here are we setting forward to spend five dull hours in another man’s house, with nothing to say or to hear that was not said and heard yesterday, and may not be said and heard again to-morrow.”

Me every time I go out

She had always wanted to do every thing, and had made more progress both in drawing and music than many might have done with so little labour as she would ever submit to. […]She was not much deceived as to her own skill either as an artist or a musician, but she was not unwilling to have others deceived, or sorry to know her reputation for accomplishment often higher than it deserved.

Roman Clodia What an odd introduction!

nastya Hell yeah! It’s like the book editors have no faith in the readers or Austen’s writing. Makes me feel sad for the book.

W.D. Clarke It is a strange introduction, but after the book there are contextual essays that are quite helpful. So this 200 anniversary edition of her books is a bit of a mixed bag. I would recommend the Oxfords for the introductions (as—like I never tire of saying haha—Afterwords, of course!)

Thank you, WD :) I must admit, I was seduced by the cover of this edition -- it's so beautifully yellow-orange! And I am curious about the supplementary materials, but I mean it's Austen after all. I did recently buy The portable Dante to finally start my acquaintances with him, and that's where I plan to use all the help I can get, but I am fine with Austen, I am not studying her :) And yeah, never read the intro to the classic, people! Although I've seen some editions that helpfully warn people they will be spoiled. People would overestimate what is a well-known. But I do often enjoy meeting the book fresh and make my own first impressions
