this book is a hoot!!!!

it was written by an english teenager in the 80s... it's like a mishmash of sweet valley high meets some sort of weird idea of what they think california is like. the language is really odd. there are JDs (not the law degree! juvenile delinquents), "flapjacks yonder", etc. the prose is bad but endearingly so and it's more fun than some trad published books

objectively bad but extremely enjoyable. it's a weird mix of typical svh type plotpoints but with dark undertones (although this came out prior to svh and seems to be set in 78 - the movie "moment by moment" is referenced)

there are some relatively obscure words sprinkled in (roorback, concupiscence, coition) which makes me wonder - what was this girl reading and where did she pick these words up from???!

wait, i've misunderstood some of this. he doesn't live in england dreaming of malibu. he lives in malibu! he mentioned being cold and living in a tenement and i think the author being from the uk made me make incorrect assumptions. oh! i might need to start again from the beginning and go slow

this is vintage self published YA. it's famous because the author doesn't speak and was in a mental hospital for a long time.

the story is about a guy living in working class england and dreams about life in malibu. he has an unrequited crush on a cheerleader. the agonising cheerleader love still exists while simultaneously being redirected onto pepsi (yes the drink). it's a bit weird but in a good way

it comes with a handwritten introduction! <3

the book itself has a LOT of adjectives (eg "the turbulent supermarket" "the intellectual face" "the hefty box") but this is okay because she's a psych case who doesn't speak (so relatable!) and this is her first book she wrote as a teenager
