Weird that Jean Toomer is in this anthology since he actively defied racial boxes his whole life but glad he is cus I wouldn’t know of him otherwise. Fern was very short, very abstract and sooooo beautiful, I definitely need to read Cane in full

The Scapegoat was kind of disappointing. Very flatly written and just didn’t find it that interesting. It felt like reading a newspaper clipping and lacked the romanticism and blues of the other stuff in this book

Just finished The Sheriff’s Children and I don’t know if I can hack the rest of this book tbh. Might skip the postbellum stories because they make me feel so ill. The failure of reconstruction and being forced towards such extreme means for a semblance of freedom, I can’t stop thinking about how Tom must’ve felt bleeding out in his cell. Selling your own son omfg….
