Greville Fane. Less a story than a great sketch of a wretched writer who churns out potboilers. James is savage here, the entire thumbnail of this woman is practically composed entirely of very clever biting aphorisms.

The Lesson of The Master is revealing itself in fits and starts. I’m anxious about the writer Paul Overt who is in love with Miss Fancourt, a precocious and beautiful young lady who has a sharp intellect and perspicacity. But she is spending a lot of private with Mr. St. George an older married writer whom Paul deeply admires. Are they having an affair? Or is it as friendly and engaging a friendship as Paul seems to be having with her? Exasperating!
