So far in this book, it has been mostly about the troubles that Koreans have due to the Japanese colonisation of Korea. Sun-Hee (Keoko) and Tae-Yul (Nobuo) have to face the problems that the Japanese Imperial Army cause in Korea. For example, changing all Korean names to Japanese names, changing the language of the country and more terrible things. Also, the uncle hates being part of Japan due to his love for Korea.
