So we finally meet the man in black himself, King Kirihito. I'm hoping this arc of him being this sort of recluse running from / missing our heroes doesn't go on too long.
It's a bit curious what his motivation is if not escapism, though the way they focused on him spending months leveling up maybe hints that he just wanted to experiment dedicating himself to something to prove he could make something of himself?

Character interactions are definitely where the focus is. One of the interesting elements is that one of the main character's gender is left androgynous, so I don't really know what they're planning to do with that reveal wise. I mean, that character being a woman I guess could be a shocker since their avatar is male, but the way they're playing up the ambiguity makes it seem like it will be a woman. IDK.

I'll just voice a few complaints before I get going on the closing sections of this book. So despite taking place in a VRMMO, I can't really say that that particular motif adds much. For one, the world building isn't really there right now. You would figure they'd talk more about the scenery and it's relation to reality more, but nope. This could really have worked as Paying to Win in a Browser Game. =P

Not the Kiri(hi)tos, nooo! I was a little tired when I read the selection last night, so I may reread it. Overall basic meeting teams and dungeon crawling with zombie mobs and such. Asuha having to put up with our hero's microtransaction spirit is fun.

We get into the game world, and meet our characters' avatars. The maid being this burly man Kizvasher is funny, though they probably rules her out for any romantic possibilities. We then learn that there's a popular "black swordsman" avatar based on a certain light novel, hint hint, and there's 1,000s of him running around Narrow Fantasy Online. Reminds me of all the noobs named Cloud or Link in Monster Hunter.

I like how this stars an affluent dude. Think Byakuya Togami from Danganronpa. He graduated from college (Harvard?) at 9, and I think they say it's been 10 years, so he should be 19 I think? I think MIT gets a mention too as providing the tech for VR.
