"How was I terrified when I viewed myself in a transparent pool! At first I started back, unable to believe that it was indeed who I was reflected in the mirror; and when I became fully convinced that I was in reality the monster that I am, I was filled with the bitterest of sensations of despondence and mortification."

I can’t help but view this book as a critique of Christianity. Men envy women’s ability to create life, so they constructed a religion, a system, a society in which man is the true creator of life, when in reality, it is an entirely feminine trait. Here, we have a man who seeks to create life anew, in which he instead creates a monster. Is God not any different in his supposed creation of humanity?
