The fact that the most reliable allies of the Western powers in the region, i.e., Saudi Arabia and Egypt, have atrocious records of naked despotism and brutal governance, is a clear indication that the protection of human rights and dignity does not drive American interests in the region, regardless of the lip-service they are given when directed at Iran.
