Less Hollywood-drama’y than the movie, and also he uses (medical) science to actively help their recovery, instead of only passively watching and waiting

In the movie he clumsily used the engines because he was stressed and wanted to get away. Here, he uses the engines to assert the ships movements and pattern recognition.

The book does a way better job at making Ryland seem like an actually competent scientist, and it’s way easier to follow the research- and mission-logic, as opposed to in the movie
