Widaad I would like to give a quarterly update regarding this book, knowing that I won’t be able to give a final review until potentially 2027. (This is something I’m implementing for my own sake)

After reading 25%, I can confidently say that this is exactly the kind of book I was looking to get hooked on. The only downside is that it’s an absolute marathon.

Fang Yuan is easily one of the most unique protagonists I’ve come across. His mindset is cold, calculated, and completely detached from the usual trope, which makes him really compelling to follow.

Additionally, the fact that he’s technically a villain, yet I still find myself wanting him to win, makes it even more enjoyable to read. That being said, he isn’t a villain in the typical “I want to watch the world burn” sense. He’s more like, “I’ll do my own thing, and if anyone gets in my way, it’s on sight.” Which to be honest is a breath of fresh air compared to most villains.

The Gu system is also way deeper than I expected, and easily the most complicated power system I have ever encountered in fiction. While there is so much to take in, everything feels structured and intentional, with clear rules and trade-offs that make such a complicated power system more easy to understand which is definitely nice.

At this point, I’m fully invested, but also realizing just how long this journey is going to be. Looking forward to seeing how far this goes.
