The first person present tense is just throwing me off too much. All the similes are really clunky and don’t make much sense. Darlene is one dimensional. The narrator never SPEAKS. It’s always lines of dialogue from others and the response inside her head. Where is she? It just feels like terrible news comes to an empty room because she’s not even there.
