I remember when I was a kid, I was always puzzled by - and as an adult, am charmed by - the discrepancies in the costs of things. Here, ice skates and silk tights are thought of as roughly comparable gifts. As a kid born in the 80s, I’m used to thinking of ice skates as so expensive my parents put me off for several years (I think I was 13 when I got my first pair) whereas silk tights were an easily doable luxury.
