I'm having a difficult time believing Joanna's mother knowingly fled without her. Tricked or coerced, maybe, but there has to be more to this. Still, it is incredibly addicting and well-researched. Race, class, and gender - the core topics we've built prejudice on since forever.

Ok this is SO vivid, SO well-researched, I feel like I'm there at the plantation with them and feeling the same rage as they are. God I love good historical fiction. The only issues so far are what feels like the author trying a little too hard to show off her research and some slight character personality extremes that feel a little "too much"

Oh you poor girl. Your father refuses to even tell you what the problem is and you think he'll be happy you're secretly helping to solve it? Tampering with the fragile ego of someone you're dependent on is dangerous work.
