Status Update

Alright I’m in. Sanderson’s writing is making me realize I’ve been a prose snob. He’s very direct, without any of the flowery Tolkienisms that most fantasy authors strive for. I think I was expecting something pulpier. But it really isn’t. The complexity of the worldbuilding and emotional insight is very sophisticated. I’m enjoying myself.

I really enjoyed Part 1 of this book, but Part 2 is dragging for me. Sanderson’s writing is very straightforward and unadorned which isn’t necessarily a problem, but the morality is also very heavy handed, and sometimes it kind of feels like lecturing. I do really enjoy his character development and his insight about the nature of leadership. It’s a well done story but the prose just doesn’t breathe.
