My conflict with the work remains the same. The author feels as though she has sacrificed character development and relations for the greater themes of the novel that she is passionate of: the unjust history of the British empire. The novel traverses back and forth between dark academia novel with magical realism and essay on anti colonialism with the main characters as vehicles for the themes.

Will always love RF Kuang's writing, though I have a couple gripes; a lot of the character relationships feel underdeveloped, montages instead of actual dialogue delving into their interactions, and a lot of the scenes drag on, especially when it comes to the theory of the magic system.
