So far the story that sticks the most to me is the stoker and the children on a country road. Have not read metamorphosis yet. The children on the country road to me presents two stark differences. To be aware and tired, sad. Or to be blissfully unaware and infinitely energetic. Like youth vs maturity. And for the stoker, how quick strong bonds form when in solitude, and how ties to power can take that away.
