it feels like Svidrigailov and Raskolnikov sound similar on the surface- both talk a lot, both seem open- but the difference in their intentions makes it unsettling. one is genuine, the other is manipulative, so even when they speak in similar ways, they're not actually communicating the same thing.

from my pov, crime & punishment has become less about the crime and more about Raskolnikov’s mental collapse. what stands out is how his own ideas are destroying him instead of making him powerful, & even though the story is slow, it feels intense and uncomfortable in a way that makes it really compelling.
