I’ll be interested to see what you think of this book, Nancy. If I’m not mistaken, despite her fame and talent, Hurston died in poverty.

I'm afraid it looks as if her story is headed that way, David. A biography of someone whose life you don't know very well can feel like reading fiction. I am hoping for the best and fearing the worst. She's been through so many bouts of financial (and other) hardship already that it seems inevitable. The author, the late professor of journalism Valerie Boyd, does her story justice.
