Is this interesting and hidden history? Yes. There is so much potential here. Is Rose Valland’s story being knocked out of the park? Not at all. The author is trying to do way too much here. This could have been 150 pages and Rose could have been the central hero.

I’m gonna finish it, but it’s not the book the cover hooks you with.

So far, very ~ to Edsel’s Rescuing Da Vinci; hoping it shifts to more of Valland’s part in WW2’s undercover art operation. The author has clearly researched in-depth, a little bogged down; history narrative is challenging to follow bc of the bounciness of her chapters

“In an uncertain political climate, art was a reminder of the beauty in the world and humanity’s capacity for creation” (21).
