The Purlieus was a real great short story about… hard to describe, liminal spaces? Liminal existence?

This is some of the strangest stuff I’ve ever read. Sometimes I’m going back, thinking like, surely, I’ve missed something. I’m completely disoriented—nope, haven’t missed anything, just completely lost. What are these people milking? What is the stillness?
