The novel, especially the Classic Nineteenth Century Novel (which this is obviously like a type specimen of) has been described as a bourgeois form, but in content this is the least bourgeois novel I've ever encountered. There's absolutely no conception of honorable self-interest - only mad grasping self-interest, mad pure benevolence, or mad and pointless malice.
