So, in that moment, all the flowers in our garden and in M. Swann’s park, and the water lilies on the Vivonne and the good folk of the village and their little dwellings and the parish church and the whole of Combray and of its surroundings, taking their proper shapes and growing solid, sprang into being, town and gardens alike, from my cup of tea.

There is the Celtic belief that the souls of those whom we have lost are held captive in some inferior being, in an animal, in a plant, in some inanimate object, until the day when we happen to pass by the tree or animal. Then they start and tremble, they call us by our name, and as soon as we have recognized their voice, the spell is broken.
Delivered by us, they have overcome death and return to share our life.

It was enough if, in my own bed, my sleep was deep and relaxed; for then I lost all sense of the place in which I had gone to sleep, and when I awoke at midnight, not knowing where I was, I could not be sure at first who I was; I had only the most rudimentary sense of existence, such as may lurk and flicker in the depths of an animal's consciousness; I was more destitute of human qualities than the cave-dweller.

Pia G. Is Proust testing your patience yet, or are you enjoying it? 🤗

Murray Ha … at first he went on and on about being deprived of a goodnight kiss from his mother till I thought I’d go mad 🤪 it improved with the quixotic games with his bedridden aunt. However at this point I enjoy the Turkish novel more 🙌🏼 🙌🏼

Pia G. Ugh, sounds exhausting! 🤯

Murray It was but I’m stubborn like you lol. I will finish Swann’s Way. And render a fair verdict from where I sit. But unquestionably it will take a while to get through this. Classics and me don’t always agree on which wine to serve with the meal. I’ve clashed with Cervantes and Hemingway and Rushdie and Tolstoy in the past. Right now I am preferring Manti and Iskender Kebap with Baklava to round things out. Washed down with Raki.

Pia G. Haha, the way you put it, mantı and İskender sound way more tempting than a thousand pages of Proust right now! 😁 I really admire your determination, though. Looking forward to your final verdict 🤩

Murray I the jury

Murray I’d forgotten CS Lewis got the name for his lion christ figure in Narnia from you - Aslan

message 8: by Pia G. (new)

Pia G. Exactly! Maybe a little Turkish influence and a plate of mantı would’ve helped Proust move those thousand pages along a bit faster! 🤩

Murray Ha ha well I will need that manti myself in order to endure plus a troupe to dance the Horon every hour I spend reading Proust!

message 10: by Pia G. (new)

Pia G. Haha, Proust is probably horrified that his masterpiece now requires mantı, iskender and horon breaks in order to survive! 😅

Murray He actually popped in that book about Matisse and Picasso. He shows up at a café and the author made the observation “Proust sat down at his table looking green.” (??) meanwhile Nuran and Mümtaz will accept my Turkish food. Ah but that .. that .. is a very sad love story to read although beautifully written.

message 12: by Pia G. (new)

Pia G. Poor Proust.. he looks green because he never had any mantı to cheer him up! But oh, Nuran and Mümtaz; their story is indeed heartbreakingly beautiful. It has such a unique atmosphere, doesn't it? I feel the saddest for Mümtaz.. 💔

Melanie Garcia Enjoy the journey! 💪🏼🥰
