“It sounds so generous to my ear: no object orphaned, all these pieces honored for all of us because some museum somewhere found them worthy. At last, safety net in the lonely struggle to hold on! I would think this would be a great comfort to the professionals stewarding such institutions, but I’ve only seen it as a threat. It’s not the possessions, but the possessing, holding on to what’s hers and yours.”
