I am still lost. It’s like trying to dance to a song with no bass.

This is disorienting. I paused to read the prequel novella from the author’s site because I needed context (and it gave a smidge) but overall I’m not tracking what’s going on, had to work way too hard to understand the connections, and there are some weird turns of phrase like “Persian carpets spill under my feet”. Spill forward? Out from under my feet? Line the floor? Sure. But carpets don’t just spill.
