Ok, now for the assemble and accuse section. It couldn’t have been the actual historical figures. Maud Wilkerson might be a man in disguise.

“Or we could play.” His cheeks turned the color of a pale-pink rose. “A game.”

“Really?” Her spirits brightened.

He nodded. “Why not?”

Maybe he didn’t hate her so much after all.

Lord have mercy. Florid prose aside, she’s supposed to be “smart” and couldn’t tell that he’s infatuated?

The heroine is insufferable, so very entitled and smart alecky. And Theo fawning over her somehow also added to the cringe factor for me. Let’s see if the mystery is at least decent.

“I wouldn’t take him back if he crawled on hands and knees with a dozen roses between his teeth.” Dorothy huffed.

Dorothy L Sayers’ love of the macabre and “prickly” quips are making her the most interesting character here so far. The MC, not so much.

“She had an obligation to keep informed, not bury her head in some made-up story. There was enough murder and mayhem in the world. Why did those mystery authors have to go inventing more?”
