Just read the chapter "The Story of a Wheaten Cake" ...
I was on the bus and had to take a break and close my eyes as not to let tears fall. The story of Paquette, her little baby girl and 4yo Quasimodo is devastating and I know the next chapters will be just the same :(
Also the amount of disgusting racism, sexism and all kinds of other -isms and phobia is overwhelming.

I love how the clergy is trembling from fear of the printing press. Oh no! Our mindfuckery of the population is going to end!
hahahahaha GET FUCKED! THE ENLIGHTMENT IS COMING!
I wonder if this is the main theme of this novel. I still haven't grasped it fully.

My pet peeve is that I dislike detailed descriptions of buildings or rooms in a story, just say "it was luxurious room full of antique gilded furniture" thats all I need and I generate a room in my head. I dont need more really...
So, I am definitely skipping chapter "The Cathedral.of Notre-Dane" and "A Bird's Eye View of Paris" : >

If we had leisure to examine one by one, with the reader, the traces of destruction imprinted on this ancient church.

Men do anything but think rational when it come to their ego. Esmeralda should've let them hang Gringoire. Now he thinks he can act like her husband?! He does nor only have no money but als no shame and no brains, only his male ego. As if such a woman would delightfully take you! You loser!

The pitcher broke in four pieces
'Brother,'said the Duke of Egypt, laying his hands upon their foreheads, 'she is thy wife - sister, he is thy husband - for four years. Go your ways.'
// I like the concept of temporary marriage. A Marriage with set time limit and everytime it is over the couple can decide if they sign the marriage again or simply go their own way. We should establish it in the modern society.

Call me delusional, but to me the beginning of this book feels like the beginning of "The Fellowship of The Ring". The way Hugo tells us about the common population of Paris and proceeds to explain the upper classes, their titles and their standing in the society as well as their personalities reminds me of Tolkien introducing us to Hobbits and the Shire. They also have a similar humorous undertones :)

"The devil take you!" growled Maitre Andry
"Maitre Andry" said Jehan, still hanging by the capital, "hold your tongue, or I'll drop on your head." Maître Andry looked up, seemed to callculate for a square of a moment the height of the pillar and thee weight of the little rogue, multiplied in his mind that height by the square of the velocity, and was silent.
//haha I didn't expect it to have my style of comedy.
